Has anyone got any experience of upgrading the MMI system in an Audi from 2G to 3G?
I have a 2008 Q7, which I am very happy with, apart from the MMI system, which has sporadic issues with reading the navigation DVD, cannot do full postcode navigation and regularly drops Bluetooth and needs rebooting to get it to work. The fact that I need to get it looked at and will have to spend money anyway, I am looking at the possibility to change the system over to the 3G system, but wanted to see if anyone on Pistonheads has actually done it (doesn't have to be with the Q7).
Thanks in advance for any tips, advice, or recommendations of who to use.

The price for me is prohibitive. You simply don't gain enough to warrant that.

Thank Rufmeister. I will look into it. From a cost perspective, it is cheaper than upgrading the car, and I would be expecting to have a bill for around £500, or more, if some of the existing units need replacing.

This company is much better priced

Only downfall is that you have to go to their unit in Kent

What software version are you running OP as I am running 5570 on 2g high on my 09 Q7 and its perfect, no dropped calls or anything but would like the full post code search

Does sound to me like you should try the latest MMI software and Nav DVD, I suspect you'll find it a lot better after that.

I upgraded to the last code release (5570) 2 years ago and have upgraded the bluetooth from CD 2 as well, which has been working fine up until about 5-6 weeks ago. Had to reboot the MMI 3 times today already, so something is wrong with the system.

MMI upgrade done a while ago. The Nav DVD upgrade won't fix the lack of full post code search. I can work with it, as long as I take a bit of time with google maps on the iphone and manually position the destination to a more accurate street/road location.

Audi Satnav Update?
Friday 10th July 2015
I've just bought a 08 Audi A3 with the DVD-based Navigation Plus system. I was irritated to find that the satnav only allows searching on the first five letters of UK postcodes and am trying to find out if it's possible to get a new DVD to update the system. I thought Audis were supposed to be awesome!
I've not been able to find a straight answer on whether an updated DVD will update the search feature. The thing is that I had exactly the same problem with my old car (a 55 reg Aston) which WAS fixed with a new DVD. So surely the same is technically possible for the Audi?
So: do any of you know if a new Satnav DVD will update the Navigation Plus system to have a full UK postcode search?

You probably need to update the firmware too. I'm not sure if that'll solve the problem but it pays to be running the latest version.
Firmware updates/the latest nav DVD are all downloadable from the net.
Obviously you do it at your own risk..
Friday 10th July 2015
Where can you get the download from?
Would this also be the case with mmi3g low?
Thanks
Mat

We're not supposed to post links on here unfortunately. The ones I downloaded were legit copies of the original, probably on a site to do with the A6 and a retrofit.

If it's an RNS-E unit then no amount of updating of firmware will enable full postcode search. An outfit called hazzydayz offer hacked firmware for MMI 3G that does support it (the data is on the discs anyway, you just can't use it) but they charge a lot of money for it, so you'd have to REALLY want it to go that route! I'm not sure the same option is available for the older RNS-E but a quick google should answer that.
The DVD in RNS-E is dual layer and it is not straightforward to successfully burn a copy, as only specific burners work and most of them aren't current.
I can point you in the right direction if you PM me - I won't post links as it's against the rules

RNSE firmware updates make teeny tiny tweaks but don't add any notable functionality unless you've a very, very early unit.
The postcode thing is a minor irritant; you do get used to it. I spend most of my life driving older Audis and it really doesn't bug me.

For RNSE or the hard drive based navigation (MMI 3G+) in a later car?
Audi have called various systems 'navigation plus' over the years.

This one - Think it's the RNS-E (certainly uses a DVD not a hard drive)

Thanks for the help, everyone. I've bought a new DVD, and my satnav now has full UK postcode search. Nice!

I've just double-checked the forum rules, and they prohibit posting links for the purposes of advertising or personal gain, neither of which should apply to me simply saying where I bought my DVD from.

Dubious nature of the discs aside (they're obviously more bent than a 9 bob note) - did this require any firmware changes, or was it just a case of bunging in the new disc?
My audi nav runs from SD card (copied from MY original DVD) - and I only have 5 digit postcode search. As the OP said, it's ruddy annoying using it and having to select a streetname from a list of *lots* when I've entered a part-postcode.
Wednesday 12th August 2015
The discs contain a small firware update for the Nav system only (not the MMi in general) which takes about 1-3 minutes to update. My 2008 disc was replaced by a 2015 from the link above and I've now got the correct A2 showing!

Am interested - although not necessarily by a dodgy copied dvd - but concerned about the chances of bricking it!

AND it's got speed camera locations activated too
Which MMi do you have? I have the 2G High with a 2015 DVD and there's no speed cameras so if yours does I'd be interested.

Different system to RNS-E - yours is a single layer DVD holding less than 3GB of data whereas the RNS-E maps have to go on a dual layer DVD. I'm not aware of anyone modifying the 2G setup to have speed camera locations as POIs, but it's possible there is one

I had a previous version which updated my software on a R8 to SW0220, but then ordered a 7 digit postcode DVD and sure enough it works. Certainly not bricked the unit so all good.
